Random Favorite: Barley Tea
I’ve mentioned barley tea before, but as the weather has gotten more hot and humid, we’ve started drinking it again. If you go to a Korean restaurant you might be served water that looks a little off. It’s actually a very weak barley tea. It’s so refreshing! You can buy it in tea bags and steep it or you can just get some organic barley, roast it, and then boil it in water. (Careful! Your barley tea will have a mild laxative effect if you forget the roasting step.)
According to the internet, barley tea is also good for antioxidants, teeth, sleep, inflammation, fertility, skin, weight loss, blood sugar levels, circulation, immunity, and who knows what else. (You can look it up if you’re interested.)

Question: Why do I feel drained around certain family members and what can I do about it?
Let’s look at a few reasons you feel drained around certain people, even people you love, and what you can do about it:
You’re giving your power away & leaking energy
Perhaps you’re giving away your power by not standing in your own truth. It doesn’t mean you have to try to convert someone else to your truth. Arguing with someone who doesn’t believe the way you do can cause your energy to leak.
Accepting that the other person will not give you permission, acceptance, or whatever it is that drives you to argue is the way to keep your energy intact. Rather than defending yourself (or pushing your own agenda on their life) you can just say something like: “Thank you for your opinion, in means a lot to me that you care about me so much.” (or “I love you and I want the best for you, let me know how I can help.”). Then leave it at that.
You are sucking up other people’s negativity
Taking on a loved one’s negativity and ill energy is pretty common for people who are sensitive or may be healers. But, it’s an ineffective sort of healing that can make you weak, or even physically sick, over time. You may even be doing this unknowingly.
Acceptance of the other person is key here. If you accept who they are, and allow them the space to learn their own lessons, the need to “fix” them will diminish and you’ll stop taking on their negativity.
You can also do this meditation to ground, clear, and reinforce your own energy:
Stand with your bare feet on the Earth.
Close your eyes and look within.
Imagine a tube going from your tailbone down to the center of Earth. See any energy that is not yours and any energy that no longer serves your highest good going down the tube like dirty bath water. When all the dirty bath water is out of your body, release the tube knowing that our amazing Earth can transmute that energy into love and light for the healing of all Creation.
It is time to call back your own energy. Ask that all your lost energy come back to you. See it being magnetically pulled back into a beautiful cloud over your head. Then ask that your energy be filled with light from Heaven.
Watch as the beautiful, glowing energy fills your body. Watch it fill the space around you and heal your aura.
Then see yourself being surrounded by a red “egg”. This protective energy will let in only love, joy, and peace.
Take a deep breath and open your eyes.
Do this before you talk to people who drain you. You can also do a quick version of this any time you feel you need to reinforce your boundaries.
Someone is taking your energy
Perhaps that other person is draining because they are actually siphoning your energy. “Energetic Vampires” have gotten a lot of attention recently. Often people don’t even know they’re doing this so usually it’s not malicious (and labeling someone a vampire isn’t helpful either, but the term is helpful for illustrating the transfer of energy that can happen). One way to deal with this is to choose not to be around them. But you can’t always just shut family members out of you life. Another way to deal with this is to energetically shield yourself.
The meditation above is perfect for this.
You can also do a quick meditation in which you surround yourself with God’s light. See it like a forcefield and then reinforce it as necessary.
You may also want to review some of the suggestions in the 3 Favs & a Q from April 29, 2021. It talks about how to create energetic boundaries with your kids. Those techniques would also be useful here.
