Favorite pet picture: In honor of National Invest In Veterans Week, I’m featuring MWD Ginar. She served her country and is now in need of help with medical expenses through Mission K9 Rescue. By working with Mission K9 Rescue, you can adopt a retired dog or help with the expenses of getting a retired dog home after service and providing medical care for a retired dog. You can invest in human veterans, as well, by making a conscious effort to support veteran-owned businesses. Or, at the very least, just show a vet some love this week!
Favorite book quotes: Today I’m choosing a book in honor of a veteran I know. His business is Future Generations. This is one of three books that inspired him to become what he is today.
The Web That Has No Weaver: Understanding Chinese Medicine by Ted Kaptchuk
The Non-Corporeal Soul increases tolerance and acceptance of the pain sensation, which paradoxically automatically reduces pain’s noxiousness and intolerableness. The more room for pain, the less it hurts. For the Non-Corporeal Soul, pain and suffering are not something to flee, but a catalyst for the authentication of humanity and the generation of human kindness.
If that quote is too wordy, allow me to offer a second for your consideration:
Illness contains the seed of health.
Random favorite: Community
I have moved a lot in my life. When I moved to San Diego in 2011, I thought I was home. We’re on our 4th home since then. Each place we’ve lived, I’ve gained a community be it from church, other professionals, or other moms. This time though, my husband and I have been on our own. We haven’t formed a community around us even though we’ve lived here the longest of all of our homes in the past 10 years. But, a couple of weeks ago, a new neighbor offered me the opportunity to be in community with a group of mothers. Being with them reminds me of who my best self is. I am so grateful for her and them and the ability to remember a part of me that I’d lost touch with as I stayed in my little bubble.
Question: I read your stuff all the time and I try to do my best but I still step back into my old patterns. What do I do about it?
Funny you should ask that question! I just experienced this today myself. Here’s what happened:
I wrote the March 3 newsletter in which I said, “Be sure to modulate your vocal tone and word choices. The energy is intense today…” and then I proceeded to forget my own advice. In a moment of intensity, I let another person’s out of control emotions get the better of me. Rather than helping that person work through their difficulty, I took it personally. I got angry (again) and I yelled. I did not use violent words. I did not use violent actions. But the energy with which I said this person’s name was violent. After that, things calmed down and we had a happy evening. It wasn’t until l attempted to answer this question that I realized I still had the violence in my heart. It took snuggling with that person, clearing and refilling my energy, sending compassion and love to the situation and all involved, and sending love to that person before I felt light again. This took a matter of minutes.
Ideally we’d be all love, joy, and peace all the time. But, the thing is, we’re humans. Humans have emotions. Humans have triggers. Humans are imperfect in the most perfect ways.
This person constantly reveals to me my imperfections. Rather than feel guilty about those imperfections and old patterns, I choose to be in curiosity. Why do I react in the way I do? Growth is a process and this life provides opportunities to be a better person every day. Many times those opportunities look like triggers and old patterns.
Why is this important? Because what we experience within ourselves, we experience outside of ourselves. The violence I felt in my heart contributes to the violence in the world and I never even picked up a weapon. The control I desired contributes to a lack of freedom. But the consciousness, love, and light that is generated as a result of recognizing, moving through, and healing our triggers and old patterns is so much more powerful than any darkness.
So, next time you fall into an old pattern, give yourself compassion. Then do the work required to bring your light to the world.
