3 Favs
Favorite Pet Picture: In honor of #WorldRangerDay, I introduce you to Ranger. He is a smart guy and likes to have a job to do or he will occupy himself. If you are a Shepherd person, you get my meaning. He’s got the basic commands down, he’s treat motivated, and he’s ready to spend his life with someone who will teach him new things, give him chores, and play games with him. He is currently being cared for through Calhoun County Human Society. If you know his fur-ever family, pass this along and introduce them!
Also, I just found out that black dogs and cats are often overlooked by adopters as are dogs typically perceived as “dangerous” (like the breeds I often feature). So, keep that in mind if you’re looking for a dog to make a part of your family.
Favorite Book Quote: The Web That Has No Weaver: Understanding Chinese Medicine by Ted J. Kaptchuk, O.M.D.
Note: The Yi, Hun, Will, Po, etc. are all parts of your own spirit. Your Qi can be thought of as your energy. They are all within you according to Chinese Theory.
“Worry and excessive pondering is distressing, but it can be the basis for envisioning new possibilities in the world. Worry is transformed by the Consciousness of Potentials (Yi) into creativity and faithful support. Anger is a sensitivity to others but can also be an especially potent foundation of human kindness. The Non-Corporeal Soul (Hun) transforms assertiveness and awareness of others into benevolence. Fear detects the unknown, but it has the same energetic quality that is sensitive to and can embrace Wisdom and the trust of faith. The Will transmutes angst into wisdom. The awareness of loss and the experience of grief is not far removed from a cherished and awesome recognition of completion. The Corporeal Soul (Po) turns sadness into preciousness and beauty. The potential disruption of elation can easily become the warmth of human contact. This transformation of emotional Qi into a virtue with a similar quality of Qi at a more coherent level of organization often requires an inner effort of self-reflection. It may benefit from the assistance of herbs and acupuncture.”
Random Favorite: Magic Mesh Screen Door
This is not a paid endorsement. My husband bought some of these a few weeks ago and we went from lots of flies and the occasional mosquito in the house (yuck) to none (most of the time). They’re not perfect and they are no longer “hands free” (which might have something to do with the heat), but they are still doing their job and I love them!

& a Q
Question: I am responding to people in my life in a habitually reactive way. How do I let go of the habit and be more loving, compassionate, and respectful to both the other people and myself?
If this came naturally to me, I would have never created Change of Heart. Let me meditate on that and we’ll see what comes up!
Acceptance is the key. Your reactivity comes from a lack of control. But you can not control another. You must control your self and to do this, you must accept both your lack of control and the nature of other person in that moment. It is only when you can do this that you give the person the space to grow and change.
The hard part is stopping the habit of reactivity. To do this you must shift your emotions from something that creates barriers to something that creates bridges. In the passage quoted above, you found that anger can be transformed into benevolence.
When you begin to get reactive, stop. Instead of making a judgement, quietly make a curious observation. Acknowledge the other person. Then figure out your win-win. This is so much faster and easier than fighting and forcing once you get the hang of it.
Having clear boundries while also accepting another is a powerful way to show love to everyone involved.
I actually heard an example of this on a social media commercial for a parenting program today: Mom wanted to wash daughter’s hair. Daughter tried to shut the shower door. Mom wanted to yell and force. Instead she stopped. She said, “I see you want to shut the shower door. What’s going on?” She figured out that her daughter just wanted to play more. So, they agreed on two more minutes of play and then they would wash hair. Done.
Changing habits is hard. I acknowledge you for recognizing the pattern. Now you get to do the hard work of making things more simple. I wish you the best!
