3 Favs
Favorite Pet Picture: On #NavajoCodeTalkersDay, allow me to introduce you to Codex. This little guy loves to play chase and tug-of-war with other pups. He’ll happily sit on your lap or next to your feet (when he’s not bringing you toys). Codex is getting used to using the crate and going potty outside. He’s also got plenty of tricks he’d love to show off - like paw, fetch, and sit. He’s currently being cared for through Austin Pets Alive! He needs a home with lots of love, snuggles, play, and grass - he LOVES to roll in the grass. If you know his fur-ever family, pass this along and introduce them.
Favorite Book Quote: When She Wakes, She Will Move Mountains - 5 Steps to Reconnecting With Your Wild Authentic Inner Queen by Tanya Valentin
“You may look at other beautiful Queens in your life doing their Queenly work with calm, confident efficiency and think you could never be like them…
… And you won’t.
Because the truth is, no one will rule your realm like you. Your crown will not be identical to the crown of other Queens. There has never been another Queen like you before and there never will be. You are uniquely qualified by the mountains you have climbed, caves you have explored, and the treasures you have discovered. But take heed, dear one, you can confidently acknowledge your strengths, talents, and gifts and be humble. You get to choose how you want to rule your realms.”Random Favorite: Awkward hugs
I was at a coffeeshop the other day when an acquaintance came by my table. I got up to give him a hug, stepped on his foot, and fell into him. He caught me and, like a gentleman, acted as if nothing had happened. Now, I could have been horribly embarrassed by this, but I’ve come to know that I’m not as graceful as others seem to be. Instead, the awkward hug was a symbol of acceptance - of myself and of my willingness to allow another to accept me for who I am. Sure, it wasn’t pretty. But it was real. And allowing myself to be real feels pretty good.
What were some of your favorite things this week?
& a Q
Question: I’m a mom. I’m living on sugar and can’t get through the day without coffee. I’m exhausted and totally stressed out by the day-to-day. My clothes don’t fit anymore. I don’t even look like myself. I look old and fat and unhappy. That’s not what I want to model for my kids. How do I get back to my pre-motherhood self?
My question is: Do you really want to go back to your pre-motherhood self?
It is a common desire in our society to appear “younger” (at least for women above a certain age). But that dishonors our experiences and the wisdom we’ve gained over the years - which has an affect on not only the body but the heart, mind, and soul.
Perhaps what you want is to look healthy, feel joyful, and model balance?
If that’s the case then we need to start with mindset.
Take into consideration a simple archetypal model: The Maiden, The Mother, and The Crone.
The Maiden is young and beautiful. Her focus is on taking the steps that need to be taken to advance to The Mother (and her youth helps her do this). The Mother’s role is to nurture her family (but the problem is, in the midst of life she often forgets to nurture herself - this is the problem you’re expressing). As The Mother’s family requires less nurturing, she advances into The Crone - the Wise Woman. The Crone uses her wisdom to nurture the community - traditionally as a healer, a midwife, the mother to the mother, a spiritual leader, or in some other roll.
But the question is: Can The Mother feel young and beautiful without moving backwards. I think the answer is “yes”. But rather than focus on the word “young” which suggests youth, let’s focus on the word “healthy” (because when you are healthy you feel & look younger). Rather than focus on the word “beauty”, let’s focus on the word “joy” (because there is no greater beauty than joy in someone’s eyes).
Once you’ve reframed your goal, you will be in a better mind-frame to reach it.
Here’s how:
Do more of what brings you health - nourish yourself with beautiful, healthy foods and enjoyable movement. And do less of what doesn’t feel good (like sugar and coffee).
Nurture your joy through creativity and by doing the things you love.
Model balance through boundaries. This question addresses the how-to of boundaries.
Treat yourself with the care that you would give to your own babies.
These are not easy things to do when you’ve forgotten yourself for so long. But simple (not easy, but simple) steps will help you get there. If you want a personalized strategy, contact me by email and I can help you with that. (“Share” this message if you know someone who needs it.)
Best wishes!
