Favorite Pet Picture: In honor of #MoldyCheeseDay I introduce Cheese to you! Cheese doesn’t have much of a description but you can bet she is not moldy. She is currently being cared for through Nuzzles & Co. Adoption Center. As adorable as this little girl is, you think she would get adopted right away. However, black cats have a harder time getting adopted (and superstitions around black cats are even more prevalent around Halloween time). So, if you know her fur-ever family, take the time to pass this along and introduce them! (And be sure to keep her inside and safe on October 31st!)
Favorite Book Quote: Trust Your Vibes by Sonia Choquette
“Amazing things happen when you get enough sleep, eat properly, and take it easy. Your nerve endings relax, and your spirit, or the six-sensory part of you, rejuvenates and begins to shine light on your path.”
Random Favorite: Early Morning Sunlight
Sunlight at different times of the day does different things. Sunlight in the morning and evening do nothing for your vitamin D levels (that’s best around mid-day) BUT viewing the blue-yellow hues of early morning sunlight (before approx. 9:30 AM) for between 10-30 minutes allows you to adjust your cortisol production. Cortisol is usually demonized in the popular media because of its relationship to stress but it is has so many other functions including helping you wake up in the morning. So, if you’re tired when you wake up, going outside first thing can help reset your system so you can wake up more easily and, hopefully, improve your relationship to stressors throughout the day. I also like to connect with earth by walking barefoot on the grass while I’m getting some early morning light in my eyes. I don’t look directly at the sun - I haven’t gotten the nerve to try “eating the sun” - but I do look at the colors of the sunrise and the trees and the sky. I watch the birds and the squirrels and whatever other action seems to be occurring. This light can be accessed by the eye through contacts and glasses but not available through sunglasses or windows.

& a Q
Question: I am an experienced meditator but I had something happen the other day that has never happened before. When I went began my meditation, my eyes started going back and forth and my body was twitching and writhing. It got even more intense when I began doing my healing affirmations. I was perfectly aware of where I was the whole time. What was that all about?
Ok. This question is actually mine AND I know exactly what happened. But I share it just in case this happens to someone else and they don’t know what’s going on. I imagine this sort of thing could be very scary and might lead to an unnecessary trip to the neurologist if there is no understanding that this sort of experience is possible.
Before we begin, let’s review the basic stages of sleep. (My interpretation will vary a little from Western neurology because I incorporate both Western Neuroscience and Classical Chinese Theory.)
The first stage of sleep is N1. This is the first non-REM state of sleep in which you are just falling asleep.
N2 is the second stage. It’s harder to wake someone up from this stage.
N3 is the third stage of non-REM sleep. This is the stage in which the body might move around. It is when the DNA and body do the work of healing.
The last stage of sleep is REM (or Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. It is when the body is paralyzed but the eyes move around. REM is the state in which the psychological and emotional healing occurs, learning is processed, and memory is stored - usually accompanied by more intense dreams than the other stages might have.
Here’s what happened:
I was conscious and aware of my surroundings during my whole meditation so I was in an awake-conscious state during this whole experience.
As I began to meditate, I immediately entered a REM state. (My eyes started twitching and going back and forth and moving around.) This has occurred before. This indicated to me I was doing some profound emotional healing.
Then, my muscles started twitching. That has never happened before. I went with it and realized that was experience an N3 conscious state where the body moves and physical healing occurs.
So, I was in an awake-conscious state, in REM consciousness, and in an N3 conscious state all at the same time! I was healing physically and emotionally all at once. I took advantage of my three states of consciousness by doing some healing affirmations. It was as if my body and mind were working through them as I thought each affirmation. For example, I’d started meditating because something had made me really mad a few minutes before that. As I did an affirmation to heal from the trauma that caused the anger, I experienced a particular set of muscular involvement. As I did a healing affirmation to address any physical abuse that may have occurred in my family line, my breathing changed and the muscle involvement also changed. And so on for over a half an hour.
So, it is possible to be in three states of consciousness at once. It is possible to self-induce healing in a resting-awake state WITHOUT the use of drugs. And, I look forward to experiencing how the results of that healing session will play out.
