3 Favs
Favorite Pet Picture: In honor of #GoldStarMothersDay let me bring awareness to the Gold Star Mothers and Families while also introducing Goldie. This sweet girl found herself homeless when her person died. She’s looking for a new home full of lots of lovin’, an available couch and bed, and someone to follow around. Goldie is not a chewer and she doesn’t really play with toys. She’s a bit of an alpha female and she’ll chase reactive cats. But, mostly, she’d prefer to be right by your side. She’s currently being cared for through Blue Collar Mutts Rescue, Inc. If you know her fur-ever family, pass this along and introduce them.
Favorite Book Quote: The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel A. van der Kolk
“Imagination is absolutely critical to the quality of our lives. Our imagination enables us to leave our routine everyday existence by fantasizing about travel, food, sex, falling in love, or having the last word—all the things that make life interesting. Imagination gives us the opportunity to envision new possibilities—it is an essential launchpad for making our hopes come true. It fires our creativity, relieves our boredom, alleviates our pain, enhances our pleasure, and enriches our most intimate relationships.”
Random Favorite: Adaptive Training Foundation
From their website: “Adaptive Training Foundation provides access and inclusion to individuals living with physical or traumatic impairments by empowering them through exercise and community.”
I couldn’t find the details of their program on the website, but (according to my memory) the trainers I talked to recently said that individuals are flown out and fed, housed, and trained through a 9-week program - all for free. It sounds like such a beautiful opportunity for healing!
What were some of your favorite things this week?
& a Q
Question: There is so much wrong with the world. It’s too painful. How do I deal?
*Disclaimer: This is not psychological, medical, financial, or legal advice. If you feel you need that kind of support, please find the right professional. If you are in crisis - go here.*
I believe that we, as souls, choose to come to this world for its challenges. If we wanted perfection, we would have stayed in Heaven.
It is almost as if this is a big video game and we each chose a character to play. This video game comes with its own set of rules. We chose this game and this character so that we could experience the exact type of pain and joy that we have now.
But the fact that it feels TOO painful means you have a choice to make. You either have to accept and play by the rules - or you have to accept the current rules and then change the game.
Changing the game can look like moving to a different location that has a different set of rules. It can look like being involved with social/political/environmental change. It can look like teaching your children a different way so that they can change the world.
Whatever you do, know that you chose this. You chose this for a reason. You chose this so your soul could grow from the hardships you experience. And if you chose this, you believed you were strong enough to handle it. I believe you’re strong enough to handle it.
But the game is heavy. It is hard. It is heartbreaking. If you don’t feel strong enough to carry the weight at this moment, get support. Talk to somebody. Share the load.
Ignoring the pain is not going to change the game. Ignoring it will eat away at you, causing you to self-medicate with over-work, drugs, alcohol, screens, food, or whatever else helps you shut your eyes to what is happening around you and within you. It can even cause you to get sick.
And taking yourself out of the game deprives the world of what you have to offer because (even though you may not feel like it right this second), the fact that you see and feel the pain of the world means that you have the unique ability to be a part of the cure. You are that powerful. (Or you wouldn’t be affected by it - you wouldn’t even notice.)
But it’s your choice: accept the rules of the game that you’re currently in and find a way to bring healing to that pain or not.
Best wishes to you.
P.S. Want one simple way to begin making a change? Be loving toward the people you come in contact with (including yourself). A quick smile as you make eye contact with each person you see can make more of a difference than you will ever know.
