Favorite Pet Picture: Trakr and his handler were a trouble-prone team from the police force in Canada. Upon learning about the 9/11 attacks, they drove down from Nova Scotia to help. Trakr and his handler were suspended from the force when officials from their department saw them on TV and realized they’d gone without permission. Trakr almost died doing his job, but it was a job well-done; Trakr is known for finding the last living survivor from the rubble of the Twin Towers. Since all pictures of Trakr seem to be AP pictures, click here to see him in action. (Pictured below is a SARDUS helicopter training.) Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States is a group that trains civilian volunteers, law enforcement, and (through the Returning Soldiers Initiative) soldiers to work with search and rescue dogs. You can support SAR dogs by contributing to their Canine Medical Fund.

Favorite Book Quote: I Thought It Was Just Me: Women Reclaiming Power and Courage in a Culture of Shame by Brené Brown
“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.”
Random Favorite: The Little Chapel That Stood by A. B. Curtiss
This is a beautiful book about a chapel and all the things that happened there before, during, and after the attack on the World Trade Center and how the little chapel symbolizes the spirit freedom and the courage of the American people. Be ready to cry when you read this book! The parts about the faces of the firemen going up, the shoes on the fence, and the people on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania get me every time.
What were some of your favorite things this week?
& a Q
Question: Why send compassion to our attackers?
Everyone holds a different truth in their hearts. Most everyone tries to do the right thing, when they can, based on that truth. Sadly, we live in a world where hate and fear exist. Sometimes that hate and fear-based truth encourages one group of people to harm another in the name of religion, the “greater good”, or self-preservation.
Sending compassion allows us to not only see another side of a situation, but connect with our own humanity. It allows us to see that we are all one. The only thing that can overcome hate and fear is love. The way to get to love when we’ve been hurt is compassion.
So, today I encourage you to send compassion to those who rejoiced on this day 21 years ago and to go forward with compassion in your hearts for those who hurt others, knowing that the way to heal and overcome fear and hatred is to start by changing our own hearts.
